Radiant Floor Heat Designed for Spokane Winters: Where It Belongs in the Plan and Where It's Wasted

Every winter we get the same question from families designing their custom home: should we put radiant floor heat everywhere? The honest answer is no. Radiant heat is one of the best comfort upgrades you can build into a Spokane home, but it earns its keep in some rooms and does very little in others. If you're going to spend the money, spend it where it actually changes how the house feels at 6 a.m. in January.

What radiant floor heat actually does

Radiant floor heat runs hot water (or, less commonly, electric cable) through tubing under the finished floor. Instead of blowing warm air past you, the floor itself becomes the heat source, and the warmth rises evenly through the room. No cold spots by the window, no forced-air cycling on and off, no draft across your feet while you're standing at the kitchen sink. For an Inland Northwest winter, where the ground stays cold and the house holds that chill through the slab, that's a real difference — not a marketing line.

It pairs well with a tight, well-insulated envelope and with the geothermal systems we design into a lot of our builds, because both are about moving heat efficiently rather than brute-forcing a room warm and letting it leak back out.

Where it belongs in the plan

We look at three things when we're deciding where radiant heat goes: how long you stand still in the room, whether the floor is tile or stone, and whether the room sits over a slab, a crawl space, or another conditioned room.

  • Bathrooms. This is the easiest yes in the house. Tile floors feel cold underfoot no matter how well the room is insulated, and radiant heat solves that directly. It's also a small footprint, so the cost is modest relative to the comfort.
  • Kitchens. You stand in one spot at the sink and the range for long stretches, often on tile or stone. Radiant heat under a kitchen floor is one of the upgrades homeowners tell us they notice every single day.
  • Mudrooms and entries. These rooms take the brunt of a Spokane winter — wet boots, melting snow, cold air every time the door opens. Radiant heat keeps the floor dry-feeling and warm even when the room is working hardest.
  • Primary bathrooms and any slab-on-grade living space. A slab holds cold longer than a framed floor over a crawl space, so radiant heat does more work there than in an upper-level bedroom.

Where it's wasted

Radiant heat under carpet is a poor match. Carpet and pad insulate the room from the heat source, so you're paying for a system that has to work harder to deliver less warmth to the room above it. If a bedroom is carpeted, a properly sized forced-air or ductless system will keep it comfortable for less.

We also don't recommend it for rooms you pass through but rarely stand in — closets, hallways with no seating, or a laundry room that's mostly used for thirty seconds at a time. The comfort gain is real, but it's proportional to how long you're actually standing on that floor.

And it's not a whole-house strategy on its own. Radiant floor heat is slow to respond — it heats the mass of the floor, not the air, so it doesn't recover quickly after a big temperature swing. Most of the homes we build pair radiant heat in the rooms above with a forced-air or ductless system carrying the rest of the house, so you get fast recovery where you need it and steady, even warmth where you stand still.

Flooring that actually pairs with radiant

Tile and stone are the best conductors, which is why radiant heat and tile show up together so often in bathrooms, entries, and kitchens. The heat moves through them efficiently and the surface temperature stays even.

Hardwood can work over radiant heat, but it has to be specified correctly — the right species, the right moisture content, and installation details that account for the wood expanding and contracting with heat. This is a decision we make with you before flooring gets ordered, not after, because the wrong hardwood over a radiant system can cup or gap over a few winters. Engineered hardwood tends to be more stable over radiant heat than solid-sawn stock, and it's worth discussing with us early if you want wood floors in a radiant room.

Vinyl and laminate generally aren't a good match for radiant heat and we steer clients away from combining them.

Why this is a framing-stage decision, not a finish-stage one

Radiant heat is tubing in the floor assembly, and the manifold, zoning, and boiler or water heater sizing all have to be planned before the slab is poured or the subfloor goes down.
