Radiant Floor Heat for Spokane Winters: Where It Belongs and Where It's Wasted

Radiant floor heat comes up in almost every design conversation we have with Spokane families building a custom home. It's a good system — quiet, even, and built into the floor instead of blowing dust around a room. But it isn't the right call in every room, under every floor covering, or for every budget. We'd rather walk a homeowner through where radiant earns its keep and where it's money better spent elsewhere than sell a whole-house system because it sounds impressive on paper.

How radiant floor heat actually works

Radiant systems circulate warm water (hydronic) or run electric cable through tubing or mats set in or under the finished floor. The floor itself becomes the heat source, warming the room from the ground up instead of pushing heated air through ducts and registers. There's no blower noise, no drafts near windows, and no dust or allergens getting stirred up and recirculated the way forced air can. For a Spokane winter, where a house might sit at or below freezing outside for weeks at a stretch, that steady, even heat at floor level is the difference between a room that feels warm and one that just measures warm on a thermostat.

Hydronic radiant, run off a boiler or paired with a geothermal system, is the more efficient option for whole-room or whole-floor coverage and the one we spec most often on ground-up custom builds, because the tubing goes in during the framing and slab stages when it's straightforward to route. Electric radiant mats are simpler to retrofit into a single room — a bathroom floor during a remodel, for example — but they cost more to run continuously and make less sense heating an entire home.

Where it belongs

Bathrooms are the easiest yes. Tile floors are cold underfoot and forced air does almost nothing to warm the surface people are standing on barefoot. Radiant fixes that directly. Primary bedrooms, mudrooms, and any slab-on-grade space — a daylight basement, a great room built over a slab — are strong candidates too, because those are the rooms where cold floors are most noticeable and where the tubing is easiest to install correctly the first time.

Kitchens are a judgment call. Radiant under a tile or stone kitchen floor feels good, but heavy cabinetry, islands, and appliance footprints break up the coverage area, so the return on a full kitchen zone is smaller than in an open room. We'll usually still run it if the rest of the main floor is on radiant, for consistency, but we don't push it as a standalone upgrade.

Where it's wasted

Closets, mechanical rooms, garages that aren't heated living space, and small transitional spaces like a coat nook rarely justify the tubing and labor. The square footage is small, the room isn't occupied long enough to matter, and the cost per zone doesn't come down just because the room is small — the labor to run and pressure-test a zone is close to fixed regardless of size. We'd rather put that budget into a room the family actually stands in.

Radiant also loses some of its advantage in rooms with a lot of exterior glass and no supplemental heat source nearby — a sunroom or a great room with a full wall of west-facing windows, for instance. The floor can only push out heat so fast, and on the coldest nights it may need help from a secondary source to keep up with heat loss through that much glass. That's a conversation we have at the design table, before the tubing goes in, not after the drywall is up.

Flooring matters as much as room selection

Radiant performs best under materials that conduct heat well and won't move with temperature changes: tile, stone, and polished or stained concrete are the top performers. Engineered hardwood can work over radiant if it's rated for it and the system is designed to stay within the manufacturer's temperature limits — we've done it successfully on several Spokane builds — but solid hardwood is riskier. Wide-plank solid wood especially can cup, gap, or crack as it heats and cools with the seasons, and that's not a callback we want to be having with a family a year after they move in.

Carpet is the weak link. Padding and pile insulate the room from the very heat source you just paid to install, so a carpeted radiant zone underperforms compared to the same tubing under tile or engineered wood. If a family wants carpet in a bedroom that's also on the radiant loop, we'll say so directly and talk through whether that zone is worth the added cost.

This decision gets made room by room during design, not applied as a blanket system after the fact — one more reason the line-item budget we hand a family before groundbreaking spells out which zones are radiant, which flooring goes over each one, and why.
