
Radiant Floor Heat for Spokane Winters: Where It Belongs
Every custom home conversation in Spokane eventually turns to heat — because winters here are long, and how a house holds warmth affects the family living in it for decades, not just the first heating bill. Radiant floor heat comes up in almost every one of those conversations. It's a good system. It is not automatically the right system for every room. We design it room by room, because a plan that puts radiant everywhere spends money where it won't be felt and skips it where it would matter most.
What radiant floor heat actually does
Radiant floor heat runs hot water (or, less often, electric cable) through tubing under the finished floor. Instead of blowing warm air across a room the way a forced-air furnace does, the floor itself becomes the heat source. Heat rises evenly from the ground up, there's no draft, and no vents to arrange furniture around. For a room where people stand or sit still for long stretches — a bathroom in January, a reading nook by a window — that steady, floor-level warmth is a different kind of comfortable than forced air, and homeowners who've lived with it tend to want it again.
Where it belongs: bathrooms, primary suites, mudrooms
Bathrooms are the clearest case. Tile floors read cold to bare feet no matter how warm the room's air is, and radiant solves that directly — the floor itself is warm, not just the room around it. Primary suites are a close second, especially where hardwood or tile runs from the bedroom into the bath. Mudrooms and entries are a practical third: boots and wet floors in a Spokane winter, and radiant dries them out without a vent blowing cold air at the door every time it opens.
Where it's wasted: rooms that don't hold still
Radiant heat is slow to respond. It takes hours to bring a floor up to temperature and hours to cool back down, which is fine in a bathroom you use every day at the same times and wrong for a room whose heat load swings — a great room with a wall of west-facing glass that gets hot sun in the afternoon, or a garage-adjacent bonus room used a few times a month. Those rooms need a system that reacts in minutes, not one that's still catching up after the sun's gone down. We also don't recommend it under carpet with thick padding; carpet insulates the room from the floor's heat, which defeats the point and wastes the equipment.
Flooring choices that actually pair with radiant
Tile and stone are the best conductors — they transfer heat efficiently and are the traditional radiant floor. Engineered hardwood, run correctly with the manufacturer's radiant-rated product and moisture controls, works well and is what most families choose for bedrooms and living spaces where they want the warmth without a tile floor underfoot. Solid hardwood is riskier under radiant because Spokane's dry winter air and the floor's heat cycling can move the wood more than it's built to tolerate — we'll walk through that tradeoff with you before flooring gets ordered, not after. Thick carpet and cork are the two we steer clients away from in radiant zones.
How this gets decided in your plan
This is a room-by-room conversation we have with you early, before the mechanical system gets designed and before flooring gets selected — because both of those decisions depend on which rooms get radiant and which get forced air. Most of our custom homes end up with a mixed system: radiant in the bathrooms, primary suite, and mudroom, forced air or a supplemental system in the rooms with bigger swings in use or sun exposure. That mix costs less than radiant throughout the house and puts the comfort where you'll actually notice it every day.
